What Is a Parcel Locker?

Author: Published

At a glance: A parcel locker is a bank of secure compartments where you can collect or send packages without meeting a courier. In Poland, the word paczkomat commonly refers to a locker operated by inpost, a Polish parcel-delivery company whose locker network also operates in other European countries. You usually collect a parcel using the access method provided in your delivery notification, such as a collection code or an app.

How a parcel locker works

A courier places your package in a locked compartment at the location selected for your delivery. Once it is ready, the delivery service sends you a notification with instructions and a collection deadline. You then visit the locker and use the supplied access method to open the compartment.

A locker is different from a staffed collection point, where an employee retrieves your parcel from behind a counter. Lockers let customers handle collection themselves, although access can still depend on the location. An outdoor locker may be accessible around the clock, while one inside a shopping centre may only be reachable during opening hours.

The same locker location may also accept outgoing packages and returns. These functions depend on the operator, the service available locally and, for returns, the retailer’s arrangements.

How to collect a parcel

When shopping online, choose locker delivery if the retailer offers it, then select the exact location you want. Check the address rather than relying on a familiar location name: several lockers may be close together.

The typical collection process is:

  1. Wait for the ready-to-collect notification. A dispatch confirmation does not mean the parcel has reached the locker.
  2. Check the location and deadline. Use the latest message or the operator’s official app to confirm both.
  3. Follow the opening instructions. Depending on the local service and locker, this may involve entering collection details, scanning a code or using the app.
  4. Remove the package and close the compartment. Before leaving, make sure you have taken everything inside.

For example, if you cannot receive deliveries at home during working hours, you might choose a locker near your supermarket. You can collect the package during your usual shopping trip, provided the location is accessible and you arrive before the deadline.

Treat collection codes as access credentials. Do not post screenshots of them publicly, and only share them with someone you trust to collect the package.

Sending a package or returning an order

To send a parcel, first check that the service supports your destination and that the packaged item fits the permitted size and weight limits. Create the shipment through the operator’s official booking channel and follow its payment, labelling and drop-off instructions.

Some services support label-free sending, while others require a printed shipping label. Do not assume that a code accepted for one shipment will work for another country, carrier or return process.

For a retailer return, start with the retailer’s instructions. A locker drop-off is only the transport step: it does not by itself establish that the purchase qualifies for a refund or that return shipping is free. Keep your drop-off confirmation until the delivery or return has been resolved.

What to check before choosing a locker

Parcel lockers are useful when their location and collection window fit your routine. Home delivery may be more suitable for a bulky item or for someone who cannot easily travel to a locker.

Before booking, check these details in the operator’s official service information:

Although inpost operates in multiple European countries, booking methods, app features and delivery options can differ by market. A domestic locker service does not automatically include international locker-to-locker shipping.

If a door will not open, a compartment is empty or the wrong parcel is inside, use the official support channel rather than forcing the door. For your first delivery, choose a conveniently located locker and check its access hours before confirming the order.
