What is ping?

Author: Published

In brief: Ping is a tool for checking whether a device on a network responds and how long it takes for a message to reach it and a reply to return. In everyday usage, “ping” also means the latency itself, measured in milliseconds — the lower it is, the faster the connection responds. Low ping is particularly useful for gaming and live conversations, but it does not automatically mean fast file downloads.

What exactly does ping measure?

The ping command sends a control message to the specified device using ICMP, a protocol used for network diagnostics. If the device responds, the tool shows the time between sending the request and receiving the reply. This is RTT, or round-trip time, not latency in just one direction.

A result of 30 ms therefore means that the request and reply completed the entire journey in around 30 thousandths of a second. Factors affecting this time include the distance to the destination, the route between networks, the load on network links, and how you connect to your router.

The ping indicator displayed in a game may be measured by the game itself, without using ICMP. Its value therefore does not necessarily match the result of the ping command, especially if you are testing a different server.

What is a good ping, and how does it differ from internet speed?

When connecting to a game server, latency in the teens or tens of milliseconds usually provides responsive gameplay. Latency above 100 ms may be noticeable in fast-paced games, while several hundred milliseconds clearly makes interaction more difficult. These are rough guidelines, not universal quality thresholds: the significance of a result depends on the application and the distance to the server.

Bandwidth describes how much data can be transferred per unit of time, usually in megabits per second (Mb/s). Ping, by contrast, tells you how long you wait for a response. A 1 Gb/s connection may have higher latency than a 100 Mb/s connection if it uses a longer route or is congested.

For example, downloading a large game primarily benefits from high bandwidth. During gameplay itself, low latency, consistent latency, and the absence of packet loss become more important. Packets are small portions of transmitted data.

Pay attention to more than just the average. Jitter is variation in latency: results of 20, 22, and 21 ms indicate different conditions from 20, 150, and 400 ms. Sudden spikes can cause stuttering in a game or disruptions during a conversation, even if some measurements look good.

How do you check ping on a computer?

You do not need to install an additional program. On Windows, open Command Prompt or PowerShell and enter:

ping 1.1.1.1

Windows sends four requests by default. For a longer test, use ping -n 20 1.1.1.1. On macOS or Linux, open Terminal and enter:

ping -c 20 1.1.1.1

The address 1.1.1.1 belongs to Cloudflare’s public DNS service; in this command, it serves only as the destination for a connectivity test. You can replace it with your router’s address or a domain name, such as example.com. With a domain name, the computer must first determine its IP address through DNS — the system that translates names into network addresses.

In the results, check:

No packet loss in a short test does not rule out occasional faults. If the problem occurs every few minutes, run a longer test while using the application that is stuttering.

How do you identify the cause of high ping?

Comparing measurements taken under different conditions is more useful than judging a single number. Start with the following procedure:

  1. Check the ping to your router. You can find its address in your network settings as the default gateway. Spikes at this stage suggest a local network problem, although the router itself may give diagnostic responses low priority.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with an Ethernet cable. If the results become stable after connecting a cable, check Wi-Fi coverage, interference, and the router’s location.
  3. Pause downloads, uploads, and backups. If latency increases under load, the cause may be data queuing on a congested connection.
  4. Test several destinations on the internet. A good result for one address and a poor one for another may indicate differences in routing or a problem at a particular destination.

If you use a VPN, also compare results with the tunnel enabled and disabled, provided the rules for using that network allow it. A VPN changes the route your traffic takes and may increase latency. Changing your DNS server, on the other hand, will usually not reduce ping to a game server to which a connection has already been established.

What can ping not determine?

A timeout message does not prove that a website or server is down. A device or firewall may block ICMP or limit the number of replies while still serving websites and other services correctly.

Likewise, a low ping does not confirm that an entire website is working properly. A server may respond quickly to control messages but generate pages slowly because its application or database is under heavy load. Ping is not a bandwidth test either.

Before reporting a problem to your ISP, record the time of the measurement, the address tested, the results, and whether you are using a cable or Wi-Fi. Comparing a test to your router with tests to several internet addresses will be much more helpful than simply saying “the internet has high ping”.
