What Is Web Hosting?

Author: Published

In brief: Web hosting is a service that provides server resources so that a website can be available to visitors. It stores the website’s files and, depending on the plan, its database and email as well. A domain name is the website’s address, while hosting provides the space and environment it needs to operate.

How does website hosting work?

A server is a computer or computing environment that handles requests sent over a network. When someone opens a website in a browser, the server delivers the necessary content: text, images, styles and scripts. For a WordPress-based website, it also runs software that uses a database and prepares a response for the user.

When you purchase hosting, you usually do not buy a physical computer. You receive access to specific resources and tools, such as a control panel, an application installer or features for creating email accounts. The provider maintains the infrastructure, but the extent of its responsibility for software and security depends on the service.

Hosting does not automatically include building a website. An empty hosting plan can be compared to rented premises: the space is ready, but you need to furnish it yourself or hire someone to do so.

Hosting, domain names and HTTPS — three different elements

A domain name is a readable address, such as przykladowafirma.pl. DNS, the Domain Name System, helps the browser determine which server to connect to. You can buy your domain name and hosting from different providers; in that case, you need to configure the appropriate DNS records according to the provider’s instructions.

HTTPS is an encrypted connection between the browser and the server. It requires a valid TLS certificate, still often called an SSL certificate. A certificate does not replace hosting, nor does it by itself confirm that the website’s owner is trustworthy.

For example, for a hair salon’s website, you register a domain name, choose hosting and upload a website with a price list. You then point the domain name to the server and enable HTTPS. The email account kontakt (at) przykladowafirma.pl can run within the same plan or through a separate email service.

If you use a website builder or an e-commerce platform, hosting may be included in the subscription. In that situation, a separate hosting plan may be unnecessary, although you often still need to pay for your own domain name separately.

What types of hosting can you choose?

Plan names do not always indicate the same scope of services. What matters most is who manages the environment, which resources are available and what restrictions the provider imposes.

Type of serviceWhat you getWhen to consider it
Shared hostingAn account in an environment whose resources are used by many customersA simple business website, blog or small website
VPSA separate virtual server environment with greater controlAn application requiring its own configuration, provided server administration is arranged
Dedicated serverA physical server allocated to one customerA project with particular resource or configuration requirements
Managed hostingA service with a defined scope of management for the environment or applicationWhen you want to reduce the technical work you handle yourself

Managed hosting can run on various types of infrastructure. The “WordPress” label alone does not guarantee plugin updates, malware removal or help with website errors — these responsibilities should be described in the offer.

The term “cloud hosting” describes how the infrastructure is organised, but does not necessarily mean that resources scale automatically or that the service is resilient to failures. Check the specific mechanisms and billing rules rather than choosing a service based solely on its name.

Which hosting features should you consider?

Disk space is only one factor. A website may take up little space yet still run slowly because of limits on processing power, memory or the number of processes that can run simultaneously.

Before buying, check:

Confirm current limits and prices in the provider’s official specifications, price list and terms and conditions. When reviewing a service’s stated availability, also check the SLA, or Service Level Agreement, which sets out the guaranteed level of service and any compensation. It is not a promise that there will be no failures at all.

How do you choose hosting for your first website?

For a small service business website with a contact form, shared hosting that meets the requirements of your chosen system is a reasonable starting point. A VPS is not necessarily faster or more convenient: without a server administration service, you need to handle server configuration, updates and security yourself.

For an online store, what matters is not just the number of products, but also traffic, integrations and the load generated when orders are placed. Before choosing a plan, give the provider your software requirements and ask whether resources can be increased without a complicated migration.

Once the website is live, keep it updated, use strong passwords and maintain your own copy of the data outside the hosting account. The provider’s backup is useful, but you need to know in advance what it covers and whether the data can be restored.

Start by listing three needs: what you will use to build the website, whether you need email and who will handle technical maintenance. This list makes it easier to compare plans without paying for features you will not use.
